We have a Ryan sod cutter with a 5.5hp Honda and until this week have never had a hint of a problem. One or two pulls at most and its running. Of course the good deed never goes unpunished might apply here. Loaned it to a local high school to do some work on their baseball field. Since it's return no fire. We have changed both plug and plug wire, pulled the fly wheel and cleaned the surface between it and the magneto and still nothing. Any suggestions welcomed.

One thing I have always tried to follow when diagnosing gas engines is; does it have spark, compression, and fuel. If all three are there, it has to fire. My next step would be the fuel...is it clean, is it getting through, is the carb dirty, etc. Compression test for me is usually my finger over the spark plug hole, not scientific, but does help to determine if i should use a gauge on it.

Check for spark, and correct spark plug gap. There also may be an issue with the spark plug connector in the boot. After that check if it's equipped with a low oil switch, you can disconnect the wire from the terminal and recheck for correct spark.

I have seen those motors not start when low on oil due to the oil level sensor.Sometimes even when on the side hill.

Thanks for the tips..........my tech he had gone through the checklist you guys suggested. Next up is possibly a bad magneto. We have some water pumps with the same engine on them and he will swap a magneto to check that as well.........work in progress

We had this happen to ours so we just bypassed the sensor.

It turned out to be a bad magneto..............new one on order from NAPA...........much cheaper than from the dealer.
