We have a 2007 JD 2500E and have been having problems for the last year or so with some of the electric reel motors intermittently cutting out and not engaging. Right when the reels are lowered there will be a crunching sound coming from one of the reels and the red light will flash on the console. We've swapped motors around, made sure the reels weren't too tight and done all the obvious things.
We talked with Deere and they said to upgrade all the motors to the new style where there was less slop where the motor couples to the reel. We did that and it seemed to make a big difference but didn't entirely fix the problem. Now only the right front reel will act up and it seems to only do so if the reels aren't set down with the mower traveling in a perfectly straight line. Once again, there will be a crunching sound and the console light will flash and the operator will have to lift up the reels, disengage the mow lever, back up and try again. It only seems to happen when the right reel sets down a little harder than normal or if the mower is slightly still turning when the reels are set down. Any ideas would be appreciated.

When the red light flashes it is flashing a code, you need to count the fast pulses followed by a pause and then the next set of flashes. Take the count and look up the code in your book, some codes may not be in the book but your dealer should know what ones they are when you tell them the pulses. Also they can come out and hook up the service advisor and retrieve the the codes, basically running a snapshot of your entire system and what is going on within it. This advisor will tell how many time a motor or controller has shut down and where your problem is.

    Regards,

I have had the same issue on a 2005 model. Some were cured with a simple replacement of the bearings for the shaft which transfers power from the electric motor to the splined coupler. Others were a worn bearing in the electric reel motor(non-repairable). Try removing the drive belt in the reel motor housing and turning reel motor on and off to check for sticking or improper operation of the reel motor. Check the splined shaft bearings for play or any drag/sticking spots. These procedures have work for me in the past.
