I'm listening to a round table discussion today in Wendover Nevada and Mel Duke of Toana Vista Golf Course just explained the most simplistic irrigation philosophy I have ever heard. Toana Vista is literally at the Bonneville Salt Flats and he is using effluent water so you can imagine what kind of water he is using and what his soils are made of. Mel explained that he waters only half of his golf course a night. One night he does greens, tees and fairways and the next night he waters the rough and the driving range. He was told by a mentor that he should mimic a rain event which follows the philosophy heavy infrequent. He says he cycles some heads up to nine times a night.
Is anyone doing anything similar? Has anyone changed their irrigation philosophy over the last few years and discovered any unintended benefits?
