I have a tremendous amount of Saw Palmetto plantings both on and bordering our property. We have done our best over the years to keep them weed free mostly by manual labor. But many of them are full of either broad-leaf weeds or covered in vines.

I really can no longer afford the manual labor to keep up this time of year and aesthetically it looks like crap. Does anyone know of a post-emerge herbicide that could be sprayed over the top without heavily damaging the Palmetto?

Also, to date - I have never sprayed a pre emergent over the palmettos & I'm sure that would probably help the cause.

We try to bush-hog them then spray around them with Round-Up/Surflan. In the higher profile areas that are not as bad, we'll take loppers to the lower branches and leave 3-5 branches straight up. Then you can spray around the base. Not sure if too many chemicals would really hurt them bad enough where they wouldn't come back. The leaves may die, but those things are pretty tough. Cutting the lower branches then spraying around the base would be the best option if possible.

I don't have to maintain them anymore, but when I did, we would cut them back each fall/winter leaving just a few fronds at the tips. Then spray with Round-up and Pendimethalin under and around them. They would stay pretty clean and open for most of the rest of the year where we could spray weeds as needed.

In natural area, I spray Garlon at 1/2 oz right over them. Smokes the vines and weeds and the palmettos are fine. In play areas area treated by pruning once a year and round up / per em mix constantly.
