What are you using this year for winter weed control? What is $ per acre? Non overseeded Bermuda turf

I have used prodiamine and monument in the past and had some breakthrough (poa). Looking at specticle for fairways, slopes and approaches. Roughs may get simazine then prodiamine with a post herbicide.

Two courses - wall to wall Specticle Flo at the 3.125oz/ac rate. Was shocked at the price when first told, but I can actually save money by not having to do a follow-up app to clean things up like I have in the past after using Prodiamine. We can't use Simazine here as a post due to excessive use in the past and poor performance now. We are going to start applying next week, with a follow-up app at the same rate in November. Will get us way into next spring. This is non-overseeded Bermuda turf in Central Florida, all grown on sandy soil with a good organic layer on the surface.

Wish we could use Specticle. With all the horror stories of it's use down here over the last 2 years, I think it looks better on the shelf.

I have heard bad and good. Most of the bad is high sand areas. Have heard good things about the chemical in general areas (Heavy Soils).

We have not sprayed simazine in years and have problems controlling poa with monument and other sulfuron herbicides.

If I were you I would pack that stuff up and let Parker drive it right on up here to give to me. I wouldn't even touch that stuff on your new turf.

That being said, the majority of the issues were related to applying on drought or nematode stressed turf, new turf and/or going at the highest rate. We did a trial last year at the mid-rate and were fine.

Dont you worry! That stuff will not go on any of the plants here. It's just too risky for us, especially now that I've seen the inconsistancy of soil on our fairways. I could certainly send Parker up with some Specticle is I knew he was returning with some MSMA! ;)

MSMA? What is that? I don't know what you are talking about!

Justin we sprayed Specticle last year for the first time. All fairways and about a boom or boom and a half into our roughs. The cleanest we have been coming out of the winter in the 14+ years we have been open and that on top of a very mild winter for us as you well know. Will go down again next month with the product again. Price has jumped about $20 bucks an acre but still money well spent.

From what I have been told those in more sandy soils have seen more damage than those in heavier soils. We are primarily covered in a 10 foot layer of river silt so the product tends to bind where it is placed and does not mirgrate down to the root system of the bermuda.

Coming from a guy on straight sugar sand with more nematodes than sand, paspalum patches everywhere in drought stricken Texas, I will be spraying Specticle in October at 2.5oz again just like last year. They don't tell you about it but it does have post emergent control on young Poa and the 2.5 oz rate kept me clean as a whistle through February.

I know guys who had issues going at the 5+oz rates in the spring / fall and still come back to it. I could even send you to someone with paspalum wall to wall who will be using it again after ill effects in the past.

Specticle is a great product at the right rate. Properly applied in the correct conditions you should see no problems on your non overseeded areas.

If you have non-overseeded Bermuda turf you are missing the boat by not applying Specticle! If your turf is healthy enough to handle some mild root pruning.......spray Specticle! $67.50/AC for 2.5oz rate.......kind of hard to beat that price!
