We are a new construction golf course getting ready to stock our ponds for algae and mosquito control. We plan to stock Bluegill, Bass, and sterile grass carp. My question is about mosquito control; have you guys had any luck with a specific species of fish over another for this purpose and/or do you have any suggestions from past experience with using fish for a viable option for mosquito control?

Any advice on pond management is welcome here as well. (aerators, feeding techniques, cultural and chemical practices, etc.)

    Thanks in advance.

    David

    David,
In San Diego, California our County Ag Department gives us free Mosquito fish for our lakes. They help out a lot as my golf course is on the San Diego River that is infested with Mosquitos.

I know where there are plenty of Coy (thousands) you just have to come get them, not sure about mosquito control , but they are great for algae .

Just had this discussion with several colleagues at a meeting yesterday. I'm sure some of the fish you're stocking will provide minor control of mosquitos. When I worked in the Portland, OR area the county vector control would offer free gambozia (sp?) fish to aid with control. They feed exclusively on mosquito larvae. Also, give birth to live young, no eggs to hatch so populations multiply rapidly. Received about thirty on first delivery. Divided fish and planted some in two different ponds. Within three months had thousands, must have been some pregnant females in batch I received, of the little guppies chowing down on larvae. Didn't completely eliminate the mosquito population, but helped considerably. They don't overwinter well in cooler climates and die off in shallow ponds. Never had to restock in the deepest pond that didn't completely freeze over. Little fishes, only grow to about 3" max. Don't know if your bass & bluegill will feast on the little ones, but might be worth a try.
