Good afternoon and thanks for taking the time to read this post. I just have a few questions about combo products and how effective they are versus making a separate application with a chemical.

I've been at war with crabgrass and grubs since I got here, northern Wisconsin, and I am winning thank goodness. I've been attacking the problem with Prodiamine and Imidacloprid within my application window and had great results. I should have a much smaller population this year due to me going out with Prodiamine in the late spring and Dimension in the spring/fall. However, the Dimension comes in a combo product. 19-0-6 .10% Dim. I follow the program in the bag for the spring/fall apps.

Now here's my real question. I'm looking at more combo products to use on Fwys. EC Grow is coming out with a combo fert with Dimension .15% and acelepryn .58% and Kocks new Duration slow release N system. This would get rid of a lot of time on the spreader and sprayer but I just don't know if it's enough to keep the grubs and crabgrass at bay. Barricade is pretty cheap so spraying that is just my time really and I spray imidacloprid for grubs as well. Both are full day apps. Just wondering if these combo products are beneficial and do they have enough a.i. to do the job as good as a spray app. The stand alone chemicals are much stronger obviously but I could cut my time of the sprayer and spreader by 60% or more. Is it going to be strong enough to keep the grubs and crabgrass in check is the question I keep asking my self.

    Kris,

Your .15 % dimension load is perfect for season long crabgrass control if you put it out at 200 lbs/A. This would give you .30 lbs ai/A which is plenty for your location. With that load a sales person might try to tell you to go out with 150 lbs/A which will cause your fertilizer partials to be so far apart that your control will be compromised. At 200 lbs./A I would be careful of your nitrogen load or you will be mowing your tail off. I can't help with acelepryn because I don't have experience with it in fertilizer. Good luck.

We had great success with Acelepryn the first year we put it out, so much so, that we have only gone out once with Merit the following year. Did not apply any grub control last season. Although I don't know if it has been so much the insecticide or a natural curve, has our sightings of grubs and beetles have declined some, I think even the year before the Acelepryn on our fairways.

We still do some spot treating in roughs, and try to put Acelepryn on our greens, tees, and green banks every year.

I use the Shaw's product with acelepryn and dimension. Season long control and good fertility. Google it. A little pricey at $85 a bag.

Pest pressure is a little different in your neck of the woods than mine. Our sprayers go out frequently so its not much to add another product to the mix. Spreading is never going to give you the same coverage as spraying, but could be enough for what you need to accomplish. Anytime manufacturers combine products, it will cost you more than the equivalent individual products. Acelepryn is far more expensive than generic Imidacloprid. It comes down to what your budget is and what your time is worth. It might be worth while to do a test area to see for the future. As others have noted, don't go too light with granular or your coverage will be compromised. Previous years applications and natural cycles will impact pressure from year to year. Always good to do check to monitor the actual effectiveness of your programs versus the perceived effectiveness of your programs.
