Anyone else have big issues with goosegrass this year? We made our two applications like normal, well we might have even got them down a week earlier then previous years. (0-0-20 w/.168 dithiopyr, split apps, .3.5 lb./1000 rate)

I'm thinking it was the 6.62" in June (normal is 4.85") and 8.35" in July (normally 3.68")

Also wonder if part of it is also not doing any venting or solid tine, heavier infestations seems to be high traffic areas.

Anybody not suffer, what were your secrets?

    Thanks!

I've seen some break through in our tees which we spread 0-0-7 Dimension. We had a few heavy rains/flooding this spring also, I think that is part of the reason.

This year we sprayed Dimension on fairways and I have seen very little break through there though. We made one pass around all of the fairways and there a almost perfect line where where all of the crabgrass starts! Our worst goosgrass infestations are always in the most compacted areas.

The course I manage has a huge issue with goose. A previous superintendent sprayed an unbelievable amount of dimension to try to suppress and manage the population. The problem was dithiopyr has little to no affect on goose and will preemergently control most other turf including desirable species. The whole course suffered and did not grow back until a couple years ago. I took soil samples this spring and found .1lbs of ai still in the soil. The residual ai severely reduced establishment rates of fescue and bentgrass. I sprayed prodiamine at the 6 month rate to control annuals this season and had little issues. Pylex was also applied to the bent at .25oz/acre and worked great on the goose grass. This season was unusual in the mid atlantic with rain fall and heat which ultimately broke down some of the preemergent herbicide and I did observe some breakthrough. Highly compacted areas will always favor goose among other weeds. Using implements such as a verti drain (soil reliever) and a core aerator will help over time. If it's cool season turf you can also apply 4lbs/M of ronstar (oxidiazon) which will definitely help control the heavy weed pressure and can be spot applied in areas of heavy investation.

I will tell you dithiopyr is horrible on Goosegrass. Oxidiazon is the best. I use ronstar G on tees and ronstar on fert everywhere else. In the past I've only treated specific fairways. Next year its wall to wall BABY!

Dithopyr is not a very good choice for Goosegrass control, espically with a lot of rain for the season, been there done that. Like you said Ronstar is the best choice that I have found!

Has anyone compared Specticle and Tower side by side. Would like to know which one has better control on goosegrass and doveweed. Oxidiazon is not an option on owner's residential lawn.

    Thanks

I'm on my second season using Specticle on fairways. I spray Roundup/Simazine in February, wait until green-up then do a split rate, 5 oz/A then 45 days later another 5 oz. They are as clean as ever and goose has always been a problem here. This app gets me thru Fall and into Jan-Feb. Doing Roughs next year also. This is on Bermuda, south of Atlanta.

Dimension is not effective for Dallas grass either.

Pylex as mentioned above at .25 ounce per Acre fried my Goose and didn't even effect the tees or fairways which are ryegrass and bluegrass!
