My mechanic has just taken an early retirement. I have his fall parts order (which provides a huge discount) sitting in front of me but I am wondering if I shouldn't just shelve it until someone else takes over? Anyone with similar experience or just your thoughts.....

How long has your mechanic been there? It would be my guess that he's probably got a pretty good idea of historically what parts he'll be needing per year. We use a program called ManagerPlus which allows us to look back over the past year, or any other year and generate a report of total parts used. I would be willing to bet that his parts list is a summary of the parts he orders over and over and over....some parts are just like that. I think the engineers call them "planned wear items".

Can you discuss it with your outgoing mechanic? Consider ordering the things you know you will need. Anything you aren't sure about, consider waiting. Don't want to over commit or tie someone's hands down the road.

The mechanic didn't exactly "retire" on his own terms. Read between the lines if you feel the need. I just did a cross check on the order with current inventory. While also looking at the condition of reels and have decided to considerably reduce the order. His was in the 10000 area and I have cut the fat down to 2500. I have contact one of Toro's travelling mechanic"s to go through everything with me. Ten grand and the gift of a coat has little appeal to me nor does replacing reels that don't need to be. Will keep you poated.
