I experienced heat exhaustion today and it was very unpleasant. I did not pass out, but apparently I looked pretty bad. It mostly passed in about an hour, but it has been seven hours ago and I am still feeling it. I did a little research and found that two prescriptions I am taking increase my likelihood to have this issue. I also read that most people can acclimatize to the heat in 3-5 days, but it only takes 3-5 days in rainy cooler weather to lose this. It was also recommended that people who work outside carry water or something with electrolytes and drink 8 ounces every 10-15 minutes.

I am sure I do not have to tell you guys, but it comes on fast and once you feel something it is too late.

    Scott,

First of all, glad you are ok. This topic has become a major focus for staff training every year here at the City the last few years. We have had a few minor incidents where staff don't feel well and we usually have them take it easy in the shop and drink fluids until they feel better. We don't get a lot of really hot days but when we do we sometimes take all the staff off equipment which is even hotter and have them spot water with hoses to help beat the heat. This is a serious topic that can be deadly if everyone doesn't take care of themselves.

    Take care. Gary

    Scott,
Gary did not mention it, but California has some pretty stringent laws on the books regarding heat stress in the workplace. Shade, water and frequent breaks are all part of the equation. I would bet that Florida has some similar laws as well.

At a previous job I had past out and fell one story off of a roof. Two years later I was hospitlized and had IVs hooked to me to help, unfortunitly it was the same day a profesional football player died in training camp not more than 50 miles away. I have always been careful of my staff since then. If I know it is going to be hot, we start as early as possible, butwith our equipment tat is usually as the sun comes up and are done after a few hours. I have a small 18 hole in Minnesota, but sometimes we are not used to 40 degree changes over night and highs in the 100's with high humidity.

This is precisely why I have installed a good quality air conditioner in my office.

I ended up missing two days from work and it took me a week to fully recover.

Had it in June and was the worst 4 days of my life. I felt like my body was about to shut down. Had I gone to the hospital it would have probably killed me, because they would have put me on every available machine in there. Had a crew member go out in august for 8 weeks, not sure it was legit but still bad. Definitely will change my plan next year.
