Ive been asked to brainstorm ways in which my dept. could contribute to the kids summer camp program at our club. Interested to know if any of you have had any experience with this sort of thing and what sort of activities you were able to contribute for a summer camp. I have thought about maybe a composting workshop or showing them how to cut cups. I need more Ideas!!!
    Thanks

I can't remember who did it, but I know one club sets up a super long slip and slide on a hill on the course.

You could do that or just turn the sprinklers on and walk away. Kids tend to entertain themselves with sprinklers.

Sounds like a great opportunity for some free child labor! Pull Weeds, rake bunkers, pick up sticks etc. ? You could turn each activity into a game; Whoever rakes the best Bunker Wins! The first group to clean out all the weeds in their landscape area gets to run through the sprinkler first! etc. ?

    Ryan,

We have done paint a pot at our summer camp. I buy 4 in. terra cotta pots, let the kids paint it and then show them how to plant a flower in it. They then get to take it home to mom! Huge PR and the kids love it. They get to paint, play in the potting soil and plant a pretty flower. Our kids camp director gives me a 45 min. time slot for this event. Works well. I usually let one of my college kids run it for me and if you have a girl on staff, they like doing it better than the boys. Hope this helps.

I would be cautious about letting kids play in your sprinklers! sounds like a great way to get someone hurt and if your water is coming out of a pond/lake you have to worry about brain eating Amebos (spelling). We had a kid die in the state a year ago from playing on a slip and slide which was watered with city water and he got the BEA. really sad thing.

Most kids attending our summer camp are young so I would imagine you need to come up with something fun and not work. I love the flower pot ideas and think you could add in a lesson about daily watering and so forth.

Kids also love to play in the sand maybe something in or around a sand bunker. I will think on this one and see if I can come up with a few things.

I am trying to get our club to combine golf camp with swimming camp this summer. learn golf early and swim later.

Apparently my sarcasm did not show through the font. I was not being serious about the child labor or the sprinklers. The flower-pot idea sounds good!

Jason I think your sarcasm went over my hear because it would of been something I would of done as a kid myself! It amazing how much we got away with back then compared to now.

Ryan, For a summer camp project a few years back the maintenance staff designed and precut Blue Bird boxes. The kids participating in the summer camp put the boxes together. Next each participant put their name on the bird box and the maintenance staff placed them around the golf course. We then made a map of where the bird boxes were located. The kids enjoyed this project. Sean
