Did anyone catch this on the GCSAA job board. A Supt. position in Ohio that pays $35,000. Than right below that was the same company looking for an Asst. Supt. that will pay $750/wk which equals $39,000. Must be an error. I know I am not applying.

Could be $750.00/week, just not 52 weeks?

Might be two different courses within the same company.

No, it's one-in-the-same course. I know it well. I was a snot nosed punk crew member on this course way back in the day. "Different" owner back then.

Is that 750/week in American funds? I'd be asking to be paid in Canadian dollars.

You know its amazing to me that anyone would discount a job based on wage. I started my job here as an hourly employee and have "earned" all the wage increases and perks that now come with the job. That's what I had to do to be a Superintendent. I was warned off by many not to take the job at the time. Seven years into this stop in my career tour I can say it may not have been a good job, I am the one that has made this a good job.

Very well said, Andrew. I am in the same spot. Four years ago I took the assistant position for not much money and I was told by many to not take it. However, I am making decent money now as superintendent and I really do love what I do.

not sure where to post this, but I thought I would share to see if I am missing something?

I ran, what I thought to be a pretty innocuous employment ad (on another site)in this ad I requested that the ideal candidate be able to speak English and Spanish clearly. Harmless I would say…
I received a total random response from a "fellow Supt" What do you think? have I missed something?

Please note, I changed nothing other then to remove his name

"Just a word on your job posting. How about instead of you demanding that your assistant BE BILINGUAL (speaking both English/Spanish clearly) how about demanding that your crew LEARN to speak ENGLISH. That shows a real weaknest in your character as a leader. Sorry buddy but I hope you have a really hard time filling this position. There are a lot of great assistants out in the job market that you have isolated! From one supt to the other I hate you have got to this point."

    Dear Superintendent X,

I am happy to a consider a mono-lingual staff when you learn how to stop butchering the English language. In the meantime, go club a baby seal. It will make you feel better.

I had 15 employees in Miami for 10 years that spoke four different languages: Spanish, Creole, Vietnamese and Cambodian. I used to write job descriptions in English and post them on a board outside my office. The crew would gather and talk to each other for several minutes then go to work. They did exactly what I had written on the board. I have no idea how they did it. I have never felt a need to learn another language.

The only thing you are missing is an assistant.
The other superintendent is OBVIOUSLY part of the 99%.
Don't we isolate candidates in one way or an other before we chose the right person.
The market is flooded with candidates (even so, I have not been too impressed with what is out there).
Just DON'T post "Need somebody not interested in NASCAR". Then you will really be isolating people and quite possibly, nobody will apply.

I guess when you travel overseas, you will become fluent in the national language prior to going?

Thanksgiving day was the first day I was able to take off from work since the 2nd week in April and I work through the winter as a crew of one. For the past few months I have browsed the job posts and have applied for various superintendent and assistant superintendent jobs to no avail. The point to my little story is this, Why should I have to learn to speak Spanish or any other tongue for that matter in order to be considered for employment in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA? Hell they got a job without speaking English!!!

Great point. There is no way I would ever try to improve myself to show potential employers that I'm better than the other applicants. Especially today when each job is only getting 1 or 2 applicants.

Come on, do you say the same things about jobs wanting you to have a certain amount of experience or education? I can hear it now, "Why do I need an education in that field to be considered for the job? This is the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!" Sorry, doesn't work that way.

    Andy,
Yes, you can bet your bottom dollar I'd be learning the language if I ever travel overseas to find work.

Because on many golf courses throughout the country the team members speak Spanish. So if you speak spanish than you will be able to talk to them. It is really pretty simple when you think about it.

unless of course you feel comfortable allowing your 10 dollar an hour employee translate your instructions for you. I for one value my limited bilingual abilities and work to increase my vocabulary daily.
