I recently had one of my greens tested for nematodes through Michigan State. My counts came back as follows: Cobb's Lance Nematode (50 per 100cc of soil), Ring Nematodes (155 per 100cc), Spiral (50 per 100cc), and Sting (5 per 100cc). These were classified as a low risk population density.

How do these numbers compare to anyone else's test results? Given the condition of my one green being in such poor condition when compared to the others, I'm having a hard time understanding the threshold limits of the various nematodes. Would anyone agree that my counts are very low and wouldn't require treatment?

    Thanks for any input.

Can't help you on whether those counts are high or low, but if you have one problem green, that have those counts, what might be other factors? Shade, drainage, irrigation coverage, traffic, lack of air movement, along with those counts might be playing a factor on this one green, you might have the same counts on another green that is out in the open in a good growing environment and not have issues?

    Just a thought.

These are the recommended threashold levels per 100c of soil from The University of Florida:

    Sting, Awl 10
    Lance 40
    Stubby-root 40
    Spiral 300
    Ring 500
    Sheath, Sheathoid 80
    Root-knot 80

UF also has a new way of testing for Root-knot using a mist chamber. They have been able to more accurately count Root-knot nematodes this way. Perhaps try sending a sample to them as well. The info is at http://www.turf.ufl.edu

We have seen sting upwards of 200, Root-knot around 300 and Lance in the 120 ranges. Needless to say, turf has struggled in those areas.

How did you take samples? Depending on how you collect your sample, counts can vary by a large amount. On my first test, I just sent a sample using my cup cutter so I could test for disease and nematodes. My counts came back low-medium. A month later I collected samples using a soil probe and took about 16 cores from all over the green and my counts came back pretty high.

Besides a good resource for nematode management, it has a section for proper collection of samples.

    Jeff,

I am dealing with similar issues here in Kansas City growing A4/A1, my test results are as follows:

    612 - Ring
    90 - Spiral
    72 - Sting

Not very good... waiting to hear back from William in Florida

It's not too late in most locales to get Indemnify on the ground and see excellent results with most Nematode concerns, excepting Lance and Spiral.

All, I trust this is not overstepping the boundaries of Sales Rep. I will not benefit from any of above in the discussion. If you disagree please let me know.
