I have been tank mixing Ronstar Flo and Glyphosate for several years on dormant bermuda fairways, surrounds, and roughs. We are a heavily shaded course in South Carolina and have seen significant turf loss with a couple of tough winters, particularly isolated to shaded collars and surrounds. The weed program goes down over 60 acres, and we have perennial trouble on about 10000 ft2, but its right against greens. Its enough that I am backing away from non-selectives and gonna split app Dimension in Sept & November, then follow with Ronstar Flo without the non-selective. I KNOW that I will have significant Poa breakthrough...I am thinking of cleaning up with Finale and/or Revolver, depending on distance away from bent grass greens. Anybody having similar issues or suggestions? Thanks.

I was at a course earlier this spring in Georgia that had similar issues on collars following a Round-up application. Superintendent stated he didn't think the collars were as dormant as he thought they would be because being wetter than the rest of the course.

Instead of Ronstar Flo, take a look at Specticle for your fall/winter applications and if need be, follow up with Reward around the collars. Keep Ronstar for the spring when it would work best on Goose/Crab.

May have been a little misleading the way it was worded...the Ronstar Flo app and glyphosate tank mix goes down in late winter, but the Ronstar Flo is the spring pre-emerge app. I can't use products like Spectacle as I have bent grass greens. Lateral movement of Spectacle would be a no go. I am shifting a lot of subtle, and not so subtle, part of programs, focusing on soil health and fertility of the collars in relation to my irrigation water. I am still interested in weed control programs for anyone in a similar situation. Thanks.

Don't limit your focus to herbicides alone. Consider every aspect of your maintenance routine. We deal with the dreaded "Ring of Death" syndrome frequently in these parts with added complication of a much shorter growing season. Traffic (especially when dormant or transitioning), fertility, growth regulators, and yes herbicides, all contribute to the issue. Alleviate and limit as many of e stresses as possible (herbicides are good place to start) but don't forget about ensuring this small but critical area gets all it needs to thrive.

Good point...I have put them under a figurative microscope and discovered some inconsistencies from the tight collar area vs. the rest of the surround. Mainly, we have lost some sq ft. due to bermuda encroachment, so we have a small area of bermuda on sandy soil that acts differently than the predominant soil for the rest of the surround (2-4" of old mix on top of red clay). We are going at it culturally, adjusting soils through testing, aggressively fertilizing, and changing the surfactants used in these areas-all with the goal of growing the healthiest grass we can going into dormancy. Thanks for the feedback.
