While I already know what should be a solution to my problem I still would like to know what is causing it. Maybe someone here has already experienced this issue and made a correct repair.

When we are running the mower with the lights on we are experiencing a high heat shutdown of the reels. The heat temperature guage has led bars that show the heat range and when the lights are on the bars spike into the top range when you lower the reels to cut. the reels shut off shortly afterwards. I was using the mower this morning and it had be trying to guess the issue (at the time I did not know about the lights). I noticed that on right hand turns it would shut down but not on the left even know it would spike almost as high. I also noticed if I took a longer turn to the right it would not shut down just spike just under the shutdown level. The issue is not with the water being too hot because I was able to pull the radiator cap off with no heat pressure built up.

I am thinking that I could wire the lights directly up to the battery with an inline fuse and solve the problem. but that still does not tell me why it is happening or assure that it will not happen later down the road due to something else.

Does anyone know exactly what the temperature guage is reading? Oil heat or water heat. I know we have the a simular issue in the summer when the radiator gets plugges with dry grass clippings, once we wash it out it is good to go again.

Any ideas to what my problem may be or what we can try out?

    Thanks for any help

Had the same problem last month and after trying everything it turned out to be the seat switch. Replaced the seat switch and the short wire harness (it was corroded) and it runs fine. It was a real frustrating thing because it was so intermittent. We could go out for weeks and mow three fairways before it started acting up.

The right and left turns seem to also signal to the seat switch because you probably lean differently in the seat when making opposite turns.

If you don't want to buy a seat switch try jumping the wires and see if the problem goes away first.

Sorry been busy, I talked to the service teh at Jerry Pate and he told me this is a common issue they have delt with. He told me to clean both ends to the negative cable and also the area where it is grounded to the frame. The loss of negative contact is causing the issue. He also told me there is another negative ground cable inside the arm rest area of the control panel. It was added to the end of the harness just in case. It is wire tide and will need to be cut loose, after you access it you can then run another wire from it to the negative ground on the battery. that will sove all issues with the heat/shutoff problem.
We have not had the chance to test this theory yet though. I had another issue with the machine that ended up being even worse. For some reason the left traction wheel stripped the keyway and spun out the shaft to some extent. A new section is over $1200 which is more then my budget can take at this point. I am opting to pull it off replace the seals and then we will weld the hub directly to shaft. While not the idea solution it should allow me to get another 5 years out of it hopefully and the only chance I take is the purchase of another hub if it doesn't work ($100)
