Does anyone else have department managers around them that are basically kids? For almost two years we have been operating with an assistant pro as our director of golf and about two months ago my club hired a clubhouse/office manager straight out of college. both of these are in their low twenties and have no job dedication. the pro seems to think it is perfectly acceptable to come in 15-20 minutes late every day. the girl seems to think a two hour lunch to get a pedicure is the way to go. I ask for a vendor file two days ago only to get the 2012 file (no 2013 files made up yet).

I guess I am just venting but I came in Monday and started verticutting the greens which I had scheduled for over two weeks only to fine out four greens in that we had an outside tournament 1 hour away. nothing was posted or listed on our calendar.then yesterday I find out after the Us kids tee markers were placed out on the course that they had a tournament (I could of at least given them acceptable pin locations for the tournament).

With four weeks vacation time waiting I am tempted to just take a few weeks off to forget about the crap. The worst thing is that my board members are very aware of the childish issues and still have not done anything about it.

Ok my venting is done, let me go see what surprises await me this morning.

Oh one last thing. I had knee surgery two weeks ago and left after lunch yesterday to ice it down and got a call for the girl that she needed me to look at her computer, she did not know how to turn it on!

Things of this nature have gone on at every course I have ever worked at. I don't think it is a condition that is unique to younger personnel in the clubhouse. I have learned that I can not expect to receive accurate information in a timely manner, and have instead taken responsibility for going out of my way to get that information. I now check in DAILY at the pro shop so I can be aware of the goings on.

It's amazing how many people don't realize how good communication and can make everyones life so much easier. I too check with my proshop every morning and usually a few other times throughout the day. See if anything has popped up for the afternoon then later in the day for the next day. I also make it a point to stop in and see my GM at least once a day so that way if there is anything he has to tell me he can, or at least I put myself in front of him so he can. Sorry to hear of the situation on the "younger" kids, but they all have to start out somewhere just wonder how they got there. Have you brought up the idea of a weekly meeting for 10-15 minutes so that people can be on the same page for the most part? We do that here at my club, usually not too important for my end but I do pick stuff up like certain events that if not in the meeting I wouldn't know to maybe have the clubhouse extra jazzed or something like that. Best of luck!

I have been pushing for weekly meetings for years and no one seems to care. The young pro forgot to tell anyone until the night before when they texted the office person at 10:30pm. no one seemed to think I needed to be alerted though. We are a small private member owned club where board members basically oversee things and they just get tired of having to micro manage the place. but recent word is that our board meeting next week will be a doozy when they discuss these two employees.

on my club everyone uses a time clock, even the manager, pro and chef it works great. People are on time or they do not work here.

well a little update should be in order.

The young Pro has given his resignation as of the end of the month. He is going to work at another club under a true pro so he can try to work his way up to being a golf pro.

The other one is still being herself. I thought it odd though that three weeks ago my club had me pick up a safe for them to keep the money in and this morning when I was looking for time cards I found about 10-15 different envelopes with cash deposites in them waiting to be deposited I actually saw one from May 30th.

I consider myself a young manager in today's world. I am 31 years old. I think hiring a manager younger than myself could be a catastrophic mistake for most places. Honestly I am amazed at myself for being as mature and in control of things as I am for my age. I do not know of any other managers in my area that are as young as I am and I can understand why. Until recently I didn't feel as though I would be capable of managing much of anything because everytime I was put into that situation I would get frustrated and agitated and then I would lose control of the situation. I have had some great teachers along the way and I know I am very lucky to have them as my mentors. Hiring people straight out of college is a great idea if they have intentions of putting them in a lower position and teaching them and building them up for a more responsibility filled position. Otherwise I believe they would be setting themselves up for disappointment.
